Grade 5 Science
Week Twenty-six Lessons
This week we will start the Organisms Unit. We are going to take a look at how the structures and functions of plants and animals work, and why they are important. Links to actual materials and lessons are provided throughout this post. I hope you can find something to help make planning this year a little, or a lot, easier!
TEKS/ Standards:
(A) compare the structures and functions of different species that help them live and survive such as hooves on prairie animals or webbed feet in aquatic animals; Readiness Standard
“I can” Statements:
I can compare the structures and functions of different species that help them survive.
Essential Questions:
Monday – What adaptations do you think are the best to have where you live? Why?
Tuesday –Why is an adaptation important to a certain species of animal?
Wednesday – Why is it important for plants to have adaptations?
Thursday – Which plant adaptations would be helpful to plants where you live?
Friday – Which adaptations are similar between animals and plants?
Word Wall Words:
Adaptation Species
Lesson Ideas and Materials:
Materials:
Science Wall Complete each day with your choice of word wall words.
Organisms and Environments Interactive Science Notebook
Science and Literacy Animal Adaptations
Science and Literacy Plant Adaptations
Organisms and Environments Anchor Charts
Lesson Ideas:
(M) Students will complete the Camouflage Activity. Students will also complete the Plant Observation Station. Complete the first 2 columns of a Word Wall Builder Chart. –All this is in Science and Literacy Animal Adaptations and Science and Literacy Plant Adaptations. Students will complete the Trip Around The Zoo Animal Adaptation Stations.-Science and Literacy Animal Adaptations .
(T) Students will read an informational text about Animal Adaptations and complete a graphic organizer to process the information. Students will complete a summary writing with key terms from today’s reading (this makes a good homework assignment if you are low on time). Complete the third column of the Word Wall Builder Chart. –All this is in the Science and Literacy Animal Adaptations.
(W)–Students will read an informational text about Plant Adaptations and complete a graphic organizer to process the information. Students will complete a summary writing with key terms from today’s reading (again, this makes a good homework assignment if you are low on time). Science and Literacy Plant Adaptations.
(Th) Students will complete the Plant Adaptation Stations.-Organisms and Environments Interactive Science Notebook.
Complete the Adaptations Anchor Chart as a class. – Organisms and Environments Anchor Charts The anchor chart is printable for to save you from drawing pictures and to use as a handout for your students.
The students can fill in their printable poster, and you can make one on chart paper to hang up around the room.
(F) Continue the STAAR Science Review Stations this week. Complete one or two rotations of stations this Friday. Only 5 weeks before the STAAR Science!
Lesson Notes:
Science Wall and Science Starters to start each day. (Science and Literacy Animal Adaptations and Science and Literacy Plant Adaptations) there are two sets to choose from for this week. During extra class time, complete the Life Science Vocabulary pages that accompany this week’s learning. Use this week to catch up on any words from the last few weeks that you didn’t get a chance to cover. Extra activities for this week: Animal Adaptations Notebook Activity (Organisms and Environments Interactive Science Notebook) and the Build a Plant Activity (Science and Literacy Plant Adaptations).

Need materials for younger grades?
The materials in this lesson are intended for 5th graders in Texas, but are taught in a way that they could be easily modified for younger and older grades.
Here is what I have for Earth and Space so far.
